Fruit Hunter: Dragon Fruit

Dragon Fruit
I chose the delicious fruit commonly known as Dragon Fruit for my Fruit Hunter documentation. To find this fruit that is not normally available in major supermarkets I ventured to Kensington Market in the middle of Toronto's China Town. Once I knew that I wanted the dragon fruit to be my exotic fruit I instantly knew I could find it at Kensington, I knew because I spent a lot of my childhood free time in China Town with my family and as a kid I'd always be in wonder at all the exotic fruits that were available when passing the local fruit stands. I also love the vibe in Kensington and the artisan emphasis of the local shops so I knew I could also be sure I would find a fresh and ripe fruit here. I chose the dragon fruit because I love its aesthetics and just looking at it makes me think of exotic travels to something like a Hawaiian rain forest and how sweet it must be inside the fruit! It is very pleasing to the eye and I have heard from friends that it tastes like kiwi so I was interested in trying it. When choosing my fruit I tried finding the ripest and healthies one, it had to be bright pink with bright green healthy spines. Putting your thumb to the fruit's skin it should give a slight indentation but not so much that it mushes indicating its level of ripeness. Dragon Fruit originally originate from the Americas in dry places like Southern America and all over Central American deserts but is cultivated in Asia and Europe. It is a fruit that comes from a cactus names the Hylocereus.
SENSORY EVALUATION:
Dragon Fruit Flesh and Seeds

It is a sweet and tart fruit but very juicy when ripe tasting like a mix between a kiwi and watermelon. It has a crisp but juicy bite like a watermelon slice. You can cook this fruit by grilling it like kebabs for 1-2 minutes then adding granulated sugar or icing sugar to the slightly browned fruit. I loved trying this new fruit and now I have another fruit I can add to my fruit smoothies in the morning and also recommend to my friends who haven't tried it!
